Define yourself radically as one beloved by God. This is the true self. Every other identity is illusion.

Welcome

Hi, my name is Joel, and you’ve found your way to Simply on Mission (SOM). I am a spiritual director, and the purpose for SOM is to create a space for practical, spiritual formation resources for those passionate about mercy and justice. Maybe you can relate with this paraphrase of Scripture from Eugene Peterson’s The Message:

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.

That’s what SOM is about: keeping company with Jesus Christ, and learning how to live freely and lightly – alive in love, marked by mercy, and walking out compassion. Whether you work in a church, non-profit organization, are a parent, a teacher, or a barista, it is crucial for our hearts to stay connected to Christ as our Source as we partner with Him in bringing His kingdom in our lives.

I hope this space helps you on your journey.

Thank you for visiting,
Joel Bidderman

Prayer of Surrender and Grace [audio]

What are the words that have formed you? That's what I had the opportunity to contemplate and meditate on as I prepared to preach last Sunday - as I focused on a prayer that is a part of my life.

Solitude is a Place

"Silence and solitude [is] the medicine for curing, among other things, deep distraction." - Chris Hall Lately, I've been rethinking and praying about what solitude looks like for me. As an introvert, I love (and thrive in) quiet. It re-energizes me. It fills the tank. However, I've found over the [...]

Be Filled with the Helper

Much of what I aim to cultivate in this space is focused on the inward journey, however, really, the heart behind Simply on Mission is the outward journey: sharing the love and grace of God in a way that overflows from a place of true identity. In other words, it looks [...]

A House That Points to Home

This month our family relocated to a new house. The previous rental where we had been at is being sold, and while we like that place, we had to begin searching for a new locale to lay our heads. We began praying, and we began looking, and something just right [...]

Still, Like a Tree

"...in an age of acceleration, nothing can be more exhilarating than going slow. And in an age of distraction, nothing is so luxurious as paying attention. And in an age of constant movement, nothing is so urgent as sitting still." (Pico Iyer) As I've been pursuing the practice of stillness, [...]
